Get UNREAL!!! (Tournament 3 That Is…)

Submitted by Ace of Gir on July 9, 2008 – 1:30 pm41 Comments

So I got Unreal Tournament 3 last night. And oh man, do I love that game. It’s like Halo 3 meets Call of Duty 4 meets mass carnage and awesome weapons.

Basics: Unreal Tournament 3 uses the Unreal Engine 3 and makes the most of it. Game play is fast and furious with (so far) unlimited respawns. If you’re a camper, don’t even bother playing. The game is too fast and the enemies are too smart to stay in one place. And with weapons that can kill you from half a board away, it’s too risky to stay in one spot. It’s FPS shooter with campaign and multi-player modes to keep you entertained for hours.

Weapons: There is a wide variety of kick-ass weapons like the Link gun, rocket launcher, Biorifle, and Redeemer, just to name a few. You will always start with the Enforcer pistol, which is by no means a bad weapon, but a bigger and better weapon is always just a few steps away.

Vehicles: Yes, vehicles. Tons of them. 15 to be exact. You’ll use them in all types of game play.

Arenas: There are a wide variety of Arenas. If you had time to stop and look, the graphics would be amazing. (Don’t stop to look! They’re right behind you! Aww, they killed you dead…)

Opponents: You’re opponents can also be your friends. In this game, there are some new characters and old favorites. Jester is back, along with Bishop and Reaper. Plus the old baddies like the Krall and Necris are there to make your life short.

Campaign/Multi-player: If you’ve played the other Unreal Tournaments, or even if you haven’t, you’ll easily follow the story in campaign. Basically, you’re back from the dead and out for revenge. Duh. Campaign is a little weak, but fun none-the-less. The multi-player boasts game play such as Duel, Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, and Capture the Flag. There is also a Vehicle Capture the Flag, which provides even more fun trying to steer and shoot at other vehicles and players. Multi-player can handle up to 16 online players for mass carnage, couch multiplayer is 1-4, and couch co-op is 2 players. Overall, very nicely balanced for those who want to play with their buddies or against them.

Pros: The game is somewhat like Gears of War without cover. You go in and shoot a whole bunch of things to win, usually by having so many kills or points. The game allows users to make their own maps and game play, Halo-style. I’ve yet to try it out, but in theory, it sounds awesome sauce. The characters all have their own unique personalities, and you can hear them on the field. They’ll call for backup or shout out when they kill a baddie. The respawns are pretty fast and usually put you in place to grab a better gun quickly. I haven’t tried the multi-player yet, but if the campaign is anything to go by, it’ll be faster than most gun battles. And there’s not a lot of places to hide where people can’t kill you from afar. The enemies usually never battle it out alone for too long, so watch your back or you could be surrounded by Krall before you figure out what’s going on. You have to run for your gun, Halo-style, but, and this is what makes the game awesome, the gun stays there! Yes, it does not disappear! So you can pick up the rocket launcher right after your buddy picks it up and then kill him with it!

Cons: It’s another run n’ gun, but with style. But, it’s still a run n’ gun. The campaign could be a little stronger and the load times are a little slow. You may need to turn up the “Turn” in the controls, because you’ll get killed before you can see where it came from. You have to run for your gun, but like mentioned above, it doesn’t matter because it’s continuously there. Other than that, I can’t really think of anything bad.

Therefore, I give it the illustrious: 8.5 Gir Doom Song’s out of 10!

Even though I have played the frenetic Call of Duty 4 and realized that playing Rainbow Six: Vegas or Battlefield: Bad Company by comparison makes CoD4 look like you’re on speed, I was not prepared to just how freaking insanely fast this game runs. I tried the TRAINING MAP on Insane difficulty and got owned 10 to 2. I couldn’t hit crap without high explosives. That, and playing even on normal feels like everyone else is on speed and I’m not. Still, it’s fun, but I feel like going back to CoD4 only so I can experience something other than watching blurring people kill me!

  • Ravenous Wulf says:

LOL yeah I know what ya mean, it was kinda rough for me to get used to the flow of UT3 but after a few games I think i found my groove. Though I haven’t played against people yet just bots. So that should be a whole different bag of beans.

  • x The Advent x says:

You guys are freaking me out a little, but the game sounds pretty awesome! I normally enjoy a faster paced game, so I’m definitely going to give this game a try. I’m thinking Gamefly rental!

  • Dope Kitten says:

You know what’s funny? My very first though in my very first game (which was a ranked deathmatch) was…”Damn, this game is a lot slower than I remembered!!”

hahaha I was kind of disappointed, I’m pretty sure the PC version is faster, but Xbox does what it must I suppose.

I still LOVE it though, and played for over 12 hours yesterday, I think I might give myself a seizure….

To all my friends: I know you all know how long I’ve been panting over this game, so I’m sorry for all the messages I’ve been ignoring! muah! ;p

  • Ravenous Wulf says:

Advent it is deffinetely worth a gamefly rental, I think you will be pleased. It kinda reminds me of shadowrun (well when you were playing the elf at least*LOL*) in how smoothly it runs…damn now I miss my katana and my teleport*LOL*

  • x The Advent x says:

Is it worth purchasing though? Or more worthy of a rental? I’m trying to be pickier about what I purchase these days.

  • Ravenous Wulf says:

rent it first, that way you know what your getting into. I played on insane today and it freakin kicked my ass. I am normally really good against the computer even on the hardest levels but damn this kicked my ass something fierce. Which makes me want to play it more. Oh and I found my new love of vehicles, the Cerebus, that thing is a beast

  • x The Advent x says:

Good advice. Sometimes I would be too quick to purchase (there was a long stretch where I never rented, only bought) and I definitely regretted a couple of purchases. Haha. I’ve been better about that now though lately, especially having the gamefly membership. The game sounds fun though, it would at least keep me entertained for a few hours. : )

  • Ravenous Wulf says:

yeah its interesting though I hate the warfare gametype, its all about CTF and TDM*LOL* I almost always rent first if I can, just for insurance and there have been more than a few times I was like…oh thank god I rented cause this game is DOOO DOOO*LOL*

  • x The Advent x says:

Ohhhhh. Yeah, I don’t really care for CTF. Unless it’s real life and not a video game. Then it’s kind of fun. : )

  • Smiles MD says:

Yah I think I am gonna rent UT3 first and then make a decsion on whether or not to purchase the game… i mean if its too much like Gears or H3 I prolly wont bother purchasing…

but then again if my fellow GA’s (Advent, Rav) buy it I may have to get it to give ‘em some competition ;)

  • x The Advent x says:

Haha. Here’s what I’m not too sure on. Is it -all- mutiplayer or is there also a single player storyline? I’m not sure how I’d feel about and entirely multiplayer based game like that.

  • Ravenous Wulf says:

Well the story line for single player is weak, I am not going to lie to ya there(and long). But you can play 4 player Co-op which I did all last night till the wee hrs of the morning. I still haven’t played regular multiplayer yet. I own the game so there is no rental for me on this one*LOL* but I would rent if you have the option. The gameplay is more halo-ish than gears.

  • paradox says:

i imported the PS3 version back at christmas and first thoughts were ‘meh’, was dissapointed with it tbh, it just didnt blow me away in the way i expected it to :(

and the single player gives a feeling it was just an after thought, very poor.

each to their own though i suppose.

  • x The Advent x says:

The story is very important to me. Honestly, that’s why I was so surprised that I loved GoW (story was very, very weak and had so many holes). But in GoW’s case, the gameplay made up for it. I guess that’s what I’ll have to find out about UT3.

  • Dope Kitten says:

There really is no story to speak of, and of course the single player feels like an afterthought. The Unreal series has ALWAY been developed SOLEY for multi-player gaming action.

For all the fans of multiplayer shooters out there, do you realize how gosh darn special and AMAZING this is??

Believe it or not, multiplayer game modes are a VERY small niche within the gaming community. Most shooters out there (Halo, Call of Duty, Gears of War) were all developed primarily as campaign games. A massively huge percentage of those who bought these games have NEVER touched the multi-player modes! Develops make these games with the campaign as the selling point. Looking at Gears of War specifically, Epic almost scratched the multi-player just THREE weeks before the game was released, because it was such an afterthought to the campaign (for those who play the multi-player a lot, this may explain many things, lol!)

To have a game developed specifically for multi-player action means that the developers aren’t focusing on big sales and reaching as many people as possible. In fact if you read interviews from the people at Epic, they’ll even tell you this. (I think I liked some articles from Marc Rein in my blog about Unreal). Again, so you realize how freaking special this is, to be gifted with a game like this?!?!

I guess my point to all this is that..No, the campaign is not where it’s at in this game (don’t expect any kind of storyline, lol!), but the campaign is not supposed to be where it’s at. But as far as multi-player gameplay, it’s near perfect!! It plays so amazingly well and very smoothly, it’s ten tons of fun, it lacks ALL the annoying features that tend to cripple gameplay in other less well developed multi-player shooters, there are dozens upon dozens upon dozens of maps (well over 30) and several different game modes to please all types of players, from run and gun lone wolfers to the most strategic and competitive of gamers. On top of all that it’s GORGEOUS to look at, and in my opinion is one of the best games to ever grace the 360.

Fans of FPS are very lucky to have a game like this!!

  • Ravenous Wulf says:

Don’t get me wrong I like the game, I just like a game with a good story line as well as a good multiplayer. COD has both and thats one reason I love that game. The Campaign is fun if your playing co-op, otherwise I really wouldn’t bother. I played alittle of the mulitplayer and unless your lagging up its not bad. I think its deffinetely worth renting ladies, just to dip your toes the the UT3 waters and to see what you think. Oh and give it a few games, cause for me it was one of those games that grows on you rather than an instant hit

  • x The Advent x says:

I think what really excited me from what you said, Dope, is the number of maps. That really makes a difference for me! I get so tired of playing the same circle of maps over and over again when there are only approx 10, 15 maps. Double that is amazing!

  • Dope Kitten says:

Yeah the number of maps is crazy, I went and counted and it’s actually close to 50 maps, as each game mode (Deathmatch/TDM, CTF, Warfare and Vehicle CTF) all have a different set of maps associated with them. This is only one of the features that’s so neat about a FPS developed primarily for multiplayer, and I hope it will really raise the bar for what other shooters provide their gamers.

So far I’ve really only been playing DM and TDM. I’ve been playing them a LOT, and there’s so many maps just on those gamemodes alone that I’m still not familiar with them all.

I feel like I have three other games just waiting to be played in the other modes that I haven’t tried yet!

And on top of that I’ve only played with just a few of the mutators (game-play mods) and the ones I did try were hella fun and totally crazy, so I still got that waiting as well!

(I haven’t even touched the co-op campaign yet, lol)

  • Ravenous Wulf says:

I love the co-op, in fact thats all i have played except for one DM match. I am looking forward to playing the multiplayer abit more and will kick some serious Tail with my Link gun*LOL*–I did notice the mods as well, some of those look rather interesting. The Friendly Fire one though is a must…..so watch out Dope :)

  • x The Advent x says:

Hm, DM. . . maybe I will pick it up and challenge some of you folks. I always enjoy a good competition. . . *smirk.*

  • Ravenous Wulf says:

Yeah some DM would be interesting….be interesting to watch me standing over some bodies from around here….BIG GRIN….do i smell another challenge perhaps…….Advent I know you enjoy a good challenge, i’ve been meaning to hack your pc to keep your from posting ahead of me for days now*LOL*. So when your just about to pass me next time and a big flashing message pops up saying” YOU CANNOT WIN” errrr it wasn’t me :)

  • Smiles MD says:

Ok ok I want everyone to make it nice and simple.. scale of 1-10 what do you rate the game (10 being the best) and name the best and worst thing about the game…

I got $60 riding on all your input so make it good :)

*Smiles squeezes cash in her hand as sweat starts to form on her brow*

  • Dope Kitten says:

Can I rate it an 11?

The game is more than prefect in its implementation. But whether you like it or not is really going to come down to personal aesthetic. If you sway towards the realistic tactical shooter, you may find this game frustrating. If you like over the top, in-your-face, rambo-style shooters with a distinct alien-feel, then you really shouldn’t pass this up.

But as for me, I grew up with Doom, Quake and Unreal. These were the games that started it all, so the super-duper fast pace is like an old best friend for me, running and strafing and jumping and shooting ALL AT THE SAME TIME is really what I love! Those who aren’t used to it might find it frustrating at first. It’s constant movement, and you’re not likely to get a moment’s peace while in any particular match. You can’t hesitate, you can’t stop, or you die. In fact, this game is the funnest when you’re not even thinking at all and you let your twitch trigger instinct take-over (once you’ve cultivated it, lol!)

What I love: Perfect gameplay. It’s smooth, balanced, and fun, predominantly lag-free if you’re smart about what servers and settings you choose, the weapons look great and feel even better, and there’s a ton of gorgeous and well-planned maps. From Deathmatch to Warfare there’s something for everyone. Everything about this game gets me excited, even the little things, from that squishy/mushy/exploding meat sound when you get a gib kill to the sexy deep-voiced announcer booming out “RRRRRAMPAGE!” (that’d be 15 kills without dying).

What I hate: Lack of a party system and pressing on the D-pad to talk is ridiculous, but there’s is a workaround for that so it’s not too too big of a deal at the moment. Also playing in the afternoons with the Italians and Germans, they got the game before we did and they are MAD hella good!

  • Ravenous Wulf says:

well Im not quiet the die hard quake, unreal, and doom player that dope is*LOL* I am more of a sneak and peak tactical person to tell the truth. What can I say I play like i was trained. But I do enjoy the game and am glad that I own it, on a scale of 1-10 I would rate it a 7. But then again I am a harder critic on games than most people are.

Like dope says the game play is smooth, its a contant run and gun. If you stop to think your dead, its that simple. There are tons of maps, weapons, and vehicles that will have your mouth water and begging for more. The only gametype I am not exactly fond of is warefare. Not because its bad though, just can be time consuming. The COF, VCOF, TDM, and DM can be fast and furious. You think you have the flag to your base or that one guy in your sites and BAM blindside your dead. You know how in halo, gears, and COD snipers could seriously dominate a map…..not on this game, the movement is to fast and furious for accurate scoping. you scope….BAM you die.

The downside can be laggy servers(which make laggy cod or gears look good) but those as with any new game can be just the luck of the draw or will hopefully be worked out soon. The mic well there is the fix for that, you have to hold the D pad to the right, unplug your mic, and then plug it back in and release the D pad. You will then see your mic icon pop up permanently.

  • x The Advent x says:

I haaaaaaaaaaaate having to press the D-pad to talk. That’s why I gave up social slayer. It annoyed the crap out of me. But that in itself is not enough to make me not try I game. I will be renting this soon.

I played Doom growing up but never Quake or Unreal. That’s why it will be a new experience for me. But I get a little more excited the more you guys talk about it. I’ve grown tired of a lot of my games, lately.

  • Ravenous Wulf says:

yeah its a mite annoying at the first of the game sometimes but once you do the fix your good to go. It is a pretty fun game though. oh on a side note I just realized another bad thing about apartment living. My son had opened up the blinds and with out realizing it I have been walking around in my boxers for the last 1/2 hr*LOL*

  • Smiles MD says:

Ty Ty all for the wonderful feedback I am gonna go ahead an rent UT3 and move on from there :)

LOL thanks Dope for the Italian and German tip.,. I’ll be sure to avoid playing them..

  • Ravenous Wulf says:

Hell 1/2 the time in DM you don’t know who or what your playing with cause no body bloody talks..I did run into some germans today and hit 2nd place the 2nd time I played( man I am a beast with the Flak gun) I lost because I blew myself up on time and lost a point for it.

  • x The Advent x says:

Haha well at least you weren’t naked, Rav. :P You can’t be giving out free shows like that.

I’m okay with people not talking much during DM. Most people annoy the crap out of me on multiplayer games. And I end up walking away with a headache.

It especially bothers me when someone has their mouth so close to the mic that you just hear them breathing throughout the whole match. Or they have their music on so loud it keeps their mic on the whole match. Haha.

  • Ravenous Wulf says:

yeah well luckily I think the trail next to my window isn’t used that often–Im still trying to remember if I was practicing my air guitar to “that old time rock n roll” and pulling a not as pretty version of tom cruise*ROFL* I think the DM would be awesome though in a private match with friends talking trash to one another. Yeah I hate heavy mic breathers, sounds kinda creapy*LOL*

  • x The Advent x says:

Yeah. It’s more annoying than creepy, though. I also hate underage boys being all excited and screaming into the mic. I guess I just get worst people on multiplayer. I find myself getting angry way too often. haha

  • Ravenous Wulf says:

OH little kids can be the bain of the multiplayer world. You have little boyz who are screaming, yelling, and/or trying to act all Gansta. Or worse when they blast their music up so loud it hurts your ear drums.

  • x The Advent x says:

That is the worst. And for some reason it’s always rap music. I don’t know why, but there is never young boys blaring their country. At least that would be funny.

  • Ravenous Wulf says:

LOL yeah I don’t know why it always has to be Rap music…at least have some Vanilla Ice instead of 2PAC or someone called little gansta D*LOL* Yeah I would be rolling to much to hear some little kid blaring “ive got friends in low places”*LOL* Or better yet how about some beatles with “Can’t buy me love*LOL*”

  • x The Advent x says:

Or some folk. That would be entertaining. Or some lil’ gangsta jamming to Sarah Mclachlan. These children really need to branch out a little!

  • Ravenous Wulf says:

LOL now that would be funny or some Jewel perhaps*LOL*

  • x The Advent x says:

Little boys are just too predictable. Haha. My brother was exactly how these kids are now, in terms of music habits. He never would have been such a dick on multiplayer, though.

  • Ravenous Wulf says:

LOL my brother would have been the opposite, he wouldn’t be blaring music but he would have been a dick in general on XBL*LOL* assuming he was good enough to talk the trash to begin with. He will only play games against the pc instead of actual people

  • x The Advent x says:

Haha. What a wuss! Tell him to challenge some real-life folks. : )

  • Ravenous Wulf says:

I have tried several times, I am not sure what it is. He always refuses to play actual people online, then again I used to mop the floor with his ass when we played against each other on split screen*LOL* So maybe its just flashbacks*LOL*
