But What About Brett Fav-ruh?

Silly rabbit, Brett Favre doesn’t play for Green Bay anymore!

Jokes. I’m downloading the updates, too. He’ll be a Jet just like in real life.

I’ve had my copy of Madden ‘09 for a few days now, and it’s still continuing to wow me in terms of realism and what I like to call the “pretty factor.” If it weren’t for the obvious video game screen elements (like play selection screens), I could probably walk by my tv and mistake it for an actual football game. In HD. I’ll spare you my poetic musings about how nice the field turf looks, but I’m ready to slap a giant “exceeds expectations” sticker on this game.

The commentary – while a little bit cheesy – is completely tolerable in this edition of the game. I’m actually not inclined to shut it off yet.

I really, really like the adaptive difficulty. I also thoroughly enjoy watching my Madden IQ go up a little bit after each game.

What I really, really don’t like is the Madden Test. It’s just plain awkward. There’s almost no direction whatsoever, and it took me a couple of tries to even figure out which dude I was controlling on the Pass Defense portion of the test. On the plus side, since I did so miserably on that section, I am improving vastly in that area after some actual games.

I’m also not a huge fan of the frequent use of the right analog stick. It. Is. So. Awkward. Pretty much everything that the right stick controls could be covered by another button, and I can’t wrap my head around why the designers assigned certain actions to it.

I haven’t delved into the online league play yet, but I’m pretty sure that’s on the agenda for tonight. Hopefully my opponents on XBOX Live won’t slaughter me quite as mercilessly as my boyfriend does, or I’ll make last year’s Dolphins look like rockstars. So, uh…who was it on here that said they’re miserable at football games? Doll? How about you join my league? ;)

Also, I’m happy to report that the Cleveland Browns are looking most excellent this year. Maybe they’ll (finally) get to see what a Super Bowl is like.

Glad you’re enjoying it! I haven’t picked up a copy / rented a copy yet, I’m going to wait for some more word to come out to see if it’s worth an actual purchase. It’s hard for me to actually pick up a sports game when it comes out because I know that near the end of the season it will be a ridiculous amount cheaper.

  • Ravenous Wulf says:

Yeah I have been trying to find a nice rented copy myself but its rather scarce as the moment(go figure) but as I love a good running game I think I am going to have fun with my Raiders this year :)

  • x The Advent x says:

Sure you’ll be able to. Rental places always buy tons of copies of games like this, and when people get tired of them you have many to choose from.

YAHH!! GO BROWNS !! WOOOOOOOHOOOOO SUPERBOWL HERE WE COME! (even if its just in my madden season :) )

  • Ravenous Wulf says:

I wonder if they are using the same passing system as 08 or if there have been upgrades. Not that I pass alot anyway, Im a totaly ground & pound person with the running game.

  • Ravenous Wulf says:

Ok I have played the game a time or 10*LOL* and I really like the way it looks and feels. The Graphics are outstanding and the gameplay is really smooth. If I can just get my Pass D online I will be awesome*LOL* on the plus side they made Darren McFadden a beast in the game, I have busted off a 70+ yard run in every match I have played thus far.

  • Smiles MD says:

Hmm… Mcfadden huh? So is the game play smooth and all Rav? I knew the graphic would be great b/c the last Madden had great graphics…. Also, how easy would u say the controls are on a scale 1-10 (easy to difficult)

Because for me in a football game controls make or break the game for me.. like tecmo bowl i absolutely loved it! only 2 buttons to hit LOL

  • Miss Risky says:

Rav, I’ve been loving the 70+ yard runs. Not with McFadden, though. Kellen Winslow, ftw.

Smiles, it’s not quite as simple as Tecmo Bowl, but it’s not terrible. I’d put the controls at a 4 initially and a 7 after a few games. I haven’t tried to change the default setup yet, but I’m not thrilled with the emphasis on the right analog stick. I’m ok with it for kicking, but it’s super awk to use it on defense. On the plus side, everything else is pretty intuitive.

Also of note: Aaron Rodgers isn’t terrible! When I play against the boyfriend, he usually claims the Browns (and he’s been a fan for more years than I have, so I let him), so I gave the Packers a shot last night. I don’t know if he’s nearly as good in real life, but his pass accuracy was incredible. I actually won against the boyfriend (for once).

  • Ravenous Wulf says:

Well Congrats Miss Risky on the win. I agree with you on the right analog, which is why I almost never use it*LOL* though I did use it once by accident :) and broke a tackle that let me run it in for a game winning AFC championship match last night.

Smiles I love the game play its really smooth. I would give the basic controls a 7 and a 4 for the use of the analog stick. There are also sometimes when your starting to fumble or your dropping a pass that you have to watch and hit Y or you drop the ball. which means most of the time I drop the ball*LOL* Too busy hitting the sprint button for more speed :)

I found a big difference in accuracy when Jamarcus Russell got knocked out for the season with a broken collar bone and I had to play with Walters(yeah he sucks bad enough I don’t remember his first name*LOL*)
